A Nostalgic Memory: A Television Licence from 1981 In the years when the broadcasts that now enter our homes effortlessly—and which we can even watch on our smartphones—were only just becoming widespread in our country, owning a television involved quite serious and formal procedures. The document shown in the image is an official Television Licence issued by the General Directorate of PTT Operations of the Republic of Turkey on 3 March 1981. Issued in accordance with the provisions of the Radio Act No. 3222, this document clearly demonstrates just how strictly the use of radio and television was regulated in the past. Notable details featured on the document: Single-Device Rule: A licence was valid for only one radio or television set. Notification of Transfer and Relocation: It was mandatory to notify the PTT administration in the event of transferring the device to another person, moving it to another location, ceasing its use, or losing it. Annual Fees and Penalties: Licence fees were collected every year in March. Fees not paid on time were subject to a 20 per cent surcharge, and those who failed to pay could face imprisonment and seizure of assets. Prohibition on Unauthorised Use: Possessing a television or radio without a licence was against the law and would result in legal proceedings being brought against you.
